Communications and PR Officer We are a small local charity that pack a powerful punch, supporting local people in the community with cancer. We are unique in the community in that we deliver over 20 services, all free, to people living with cancer. 1 in 2 people will likely get diagnosed with cancer in a lifetime and our experience reflects this with the number of service users increasing by approx. 25% year on year. Currently just under 7% of people with cancer in Enfield access our services, that means there is huge unmet need in the community. We want to change this and have an exciting and ambitious plan to increase access and reach to include currently under-represented groups such as diverse communities, younger people, and more men while addressing socio-economic and cultural barriers to access. The Communications and PR Officer will play a crucial role in raising awareness and visibility of The Nightingale during at this exciting time of growth. We are looking for a passionate and driven communication officer to help put us on the map. If this sounds like you, please read on. Communication and PR officer Reports into: CEO Responsible for: Social media coordinator PT: 4 days a week to be worked as full days or spread across 5 days at reduced hours Salary: £28K per year (equivalent to £35K FTE) Main responsibilities Responsible for both internal and external communications including employee engagement, website, social media and traditional media. Internal communications - Helping the CEO with drafting speeches, preparing presentations - Organising events, webinars, and internal briefings to engage employees - Working closely with the Volunteer Coordinator, to develop engaging comms for the recruitment and retention of volunteers External comms and PR - Writing, editing, and distributing press releases, newsletters, reports, speeches, and website content - Acting as a spokesperson and coordinating interviews with media. - Collaborating with the fundraising and marketing manager to ensure maximum exposure for all our key events throughout the year, drumming up support for all fundraising activities to raise as much money as possible - Building contacts with local, regional and national media - Monitoring UK local, regional and national media coverage, analysing trends, and reporting on communication effectiveness - Crisis communication and issues management Social media Working closely with the social media coordinator, to ensure that our social media acts as the face of the corporate face of the Charity, giving us a voice while ensuring that we amplify any news or events and build support in our community base. Website Maintenance of website content, look and feel to ensure it remains fresh and engaging and acts as a doorway into the Charity. Skills and Qualifications - Strong writing, editing, and content creation abilities - Strategic thinker able to see the bigger picture with experience of developing and implementing comprehensive communication and PR strategy - Media relations experience with the ability to pitch and sell in stories, profile and opinion pieces - Working knowledge of digital tools and platforms such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, -Mailchimp, Hootsuite, and Google Analytics - Excellent interpersonal skills and media handling - Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously Person specification – skills Essential - University graduate or equivalent experience - Experience of internal comms and people engagement techniques and strategies - Experience of building corporate profile, raising the visibility of the charity using different comms platforms - Experience of creating and launching campaigns to support fundraising activities - Experience of media relations, understanding what makes a news story and the ability to pitch and sell news and feature articles - Experience of identifying and segmenting audiences and ensuring relevant messaging that resonates - Excellent knowledge of social media and content development - Keeping track of current affairs and the news cycle to anticipate potential news hooks and stories - Working knowledge of the UK media landscape Desirable - Training in media or journalism - Knowledge of different internal digital comms platforms - Issues and crisis management handling - Understanding of campaigning tactics and strategies to deliver impactful campaigns that hit the target - Building and maintaining relationships with journalists and existing list of live media contacts - Knowledge of using analytics and data to shape engagement and narrative - Understanding of different tools for social media content development - Ability to monitor and keep abreast of current affairs - Knowledge of the charity and healthcare sectors and key policy drivers Benefits - 25 days of annual leave in addition to bank holidays. - Relaxed work environment with a casual dress code. - Opportunity to join workplace pension scheme.
