Why Does It Feel Like Every Road in Enfield Is Being Dug up

Why Does It Feel Like Every Road in Enfield Is Being Dug up

The issue isn’t that roads don’t need repairing. Most residents accept essential maintenance and utility work has to happen. Instead, the frustration centres on what many see as a lack of coordination, with multiple major routes affected at the same time, temporary traffic lights causing lengthy queues and diversions sometimes leaving drivers confused.

The debate comes as Enfield Council announced it has successfully prosecuted Thames Water after the company closed roads without permission and misused permits intended for urgent works. The court ordered Thames Water to pay more than £40,000, highlighting that the council does have legal powers to enforce the rules where companies fail to comply.

So the question many residents are now asking is simple: if enforcement exists, can more be done to better coordinate works and reduce the disruption affecting thousands of people every day?

Love Your Doorstep will be putting these questions to Enfield Council and would welcome hearing from residents about how roadworks are affecting their journeys across the borough.
