Trent Park House of Secrets: Family Trail

TRENT PARK HALF TERM.jpg

Trent Park House of Secrets, the north London museum that opened in July, is launching its first family trail for October half term - alongside the hands-on basement where young history detectives can find out how captured German generals were secretly overheard during the Second World War.

The museum brings together two sides of the House's story. The state rooms on the ground floor have been restored to their 1930s appearance, when Trent Park was home to Sir Philip Sassoon, who entertained royalty, politicians and stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Fred Astaire. In the basement, the listening stations and working rooms of the Secret Listeners are shown as they were in operation during the war.

Upstairs, the new Amazing Creatures Explorers trail is a playful way for under-8s to explore the state rooms and the glamorous interwar years. The trail (available from half term) is free, and copies can be collected at the ticket desk or downloaded before a visit. At the end of the state rooms, children can marvel at a scale model of the House frozen in time in 1942.

Visitors then head down to the basement, where the Secret Listeners recorded the generals' conversations through microphones hidden all over the House - in light fittings, plant pots and even the billiard table.

Children can pick up a phone to hear extracts from an officer's diary, test their ears in the Playback Room by listening, recording and spotting keywords in English and German, and watch films that use AI to bring historic photographs to life. They can also try the air-raid siren, peek into the 1940s kitchen and storerooms, and finish with a photo in Secret Listener uniform.

With the leaves turning golden across 400 acres of surrounding parkland, families can easily make a full day of it. When little legs need a rest, the café serves coffee and cake, and families are welcome to bring a packed lunch to the Clore Learning Room. The museum has space for buggies, accessible spaces and a family ticket discount.
