Under the plans, drivers would be able to use one free 30-minute parking session per vehicle, per day, across eligible street parking locations.
The scheme would also include council-operated pay-to-park car parks from Monday to Saturday.
This could make a real difference for residents who need to pop into town quickly, whether that’s to collect a prescription, visit a local shop, attend an appointment, grab a coffee, or support one of Enfield’s many independent businesses.
Local high streets have faced huge challenges over recent years, from changing shopping habits to rising costs, so anything that helps improve access and encourages footfall will be welcomed by many traders.
However, the proposal is not in place yet. Enfield Council has said it will now seek the views of residents and business owners through a consultation. The decision is also subject to “call in”, which is a formal process that allows councillors to review a Cabinet decision before it takes effect.
Parking payment options will continue to include PayByPhone, PayPoint shops and pre-purchased parking vouchers. The Council has also confirmed that paper parking vouchers will remain available from libraries and the Parking Shop, so residents who cannot or do not want to use digital payment methods are not disadvantaged.
Blue Badge holders will continue to receive the concessions available under the national Blue Badge scheme, including parking without a time limit in eligible paid-for parking bays.
Existing Sunday charging arrangements in Enfield Town car parks, including three-hour free parking, will also remain unchanged.
Cllr Maria Alexandrou, Cabinet Member for Environment, said the proposals are designed to encourage more visitors to the borough’s town centres, improve access to services and help local businesses thrive.
