Hosted by Enfield Council and GLL, the awards brought together local athletes, families, coaches and supporters to celebrate a record year for Enfield sport.
This year, 55 athletes from Enfield will receive support through the GLL Sport Foundation, the highest number ever supported through the programme in the borough. Together, local athletes will receive £37,950 in support, including financial bursaries, access to rehabilitation and wellbeing services, and membership to Better leisure facilities.
What makes this even more important is that many young athletes receive little or no other financial backing. Support like this can make a real difference, helping talented local people continue training, competing and progressing in their sport.
The evening also celebrated Team Enfield’s success at this year’s London Youth Games. Enfield finished 11th out of London’s 33 boroughs, competing in 19 sports and bringing home 28 medals. There were standout performances in U13 football, inclusive basketball, trampolining, indoor rowing, swimming and table tennis.
It was also wonderful to see participation growing, with more than 100 additional young people competing across 28 teams. Team Enfield also returned to indoor rowing and indoor cricket after several years away, which is a brilliant sign of more opportunities opening up for young people across the borough.
Events like this are a reminder of how much talent we have here in Enfield. Behind every medal, award and achievement there are hours of training, family support, coaching, early mornings, setbacks and determination.
Sport plays such an important role in our communities. It helps young people build confidence, resilience, friendships and ambition. It also gives families and communities something to come together around and celebrate.
A huge well done to all the athletes recognised at the ceremony, everyone who represented Team Enfield, and all the coaches, families and organisations helping our young people thrive.
