More local businesses and community venues are signing up to make breastfeeding parents feel comfortable, supported and welcome across Enfield.
Parents and carers across Enfield can now look out for the new Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme logo in cafés, shops, libraries and community venues across the borough. The initiative encourages local organisations to provide a welcoming environment for anyone breastfeeding, helping families feel more confident feeding their baby whenever and wherever they need to.
Enfield businesses invited to help make breastfeeding families feel welcome
Businesses and public venues across Enfield are being encouraged to join the borough's new Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme, helping to create a more welcoming environment for parents and their babies.
The free scheme makes it easier for families to identify places where they can comfortably breastfeed while out and about. It also raises awareness that breastfeeding in public is protected by law and should be supported across the community.
Businesses that sign up will receive a free welcome pack, including a "We Welcome Breastfeeding" window sticker, so families can easily recognise venues that support them.
By joining the scheme, participating venues commit to:
The scheme was officially launched on 23 June at Pearsons' Skylight Restaurant in Enfield Town. The event brought together Councillor Chris Dey, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, The Breastfeeding Network, local parents, NHS colleagues and other partners to celebrate the initiative.
Dudu Sher-Arami, Director of Public Health, said:
“We want mums to feel comfortable wherever they are in Enfield. Not only is breastfeeding protected by law, but it is also an important part of healthy babies’ development.
“However, we know that there is still stigma around public breastfeeding and as a Council, we want to dismantle any barriers that will make our mums doubtful. This is why we have partnered with The Breastfeeding Network to launch Enfield’s Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme to encourage positive experiences for mums in any public spaces in Enfield.
“In the last four years, there has been 7% increase in breastfeeding in the borough and we would like to continue showing support.
“I would encourage our local businesses, restaurants or any public venues to sign up to this scheme to ensure mums know they will be welcomed.”
Enfield Council has already achieved the first stage of accreditation under the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative community standards and is continuing to work towards full accreditation. This reflects the Council's commitment to supporting parents and giving every child the best possible start in life.
